The flip that changes everything

Hi Reader,

Today I want to share with you one of my favourite productivity "hacks".

It’s very simple and incredibly powerful, and it can completely transform your productivity, your work/life balance, your income… and indeed your life!

And yet… almost nobody does it.

But before I tell you what it is, you need to understand this...

There are only two kinds of tasks

In your business, every task you do falls into one of these two categories:

1. Focus Work

These are the tasks that move you closer to your goals.

The work that actually builds your business and makes you money.

These are your Most Impactful Tasks or ‘MITs’ that I talked about in last week’s newsletter.

2. Admin Work

This is everything else…

Replying to emails, dealing with notifications, managing social media, checking stats, doing your accounts, handling your tax return, plugin updates, fixing broken links, fixing small design-related niggles on your website, filing, customer service related tasks… and non-work related tasks like housework.

Often (though not always) these are necessary tasks – but they don’t actually move your business forward.

The flip that changes everything...

Most people start their day with admin work.

Tell me if this sounds familiar…

You wake up, check social media, scroll, reply to messages, check your stats, check and reply to emails, tweak things, get lost down a rabbit hole, do some housework…

...and before you know it, the day is over – and you haven’t touched the work that actually moves your business forward AKA your MITs.

Here’s the trick that changes everything…

👉 Do your focus work first each day. Then do your admin.

That’s it.

That’s the change.

It sounds almost too simple.

But it works like magic.

Because when you do your most important tasks first:

  • You finally make progress on what actually moves the dial
  • You give energy to the things that matter most
  • You build momentum early in the day
  • That momentum boosts your motivation

And admin somehow still gets done – but takes far less of your time.

(It's amazing how much less time admin takes up each day when you are not using it to procrastinate starting your 'real' work!)

This is not a complicated system

You don’t need:

  • Fancy project management software
  • Elaborate planners
  • Complicated systems
  • Or more time

You just need one rule:

👉 Do your focus work first each day. Then do your admin.

Why this works

The brain loves novelty and distraction.

A text message, a new email, a notification ping – all of these hijack your attention and push focus work to the bottom of the to do list.

But when focus work is done first – before email, before messages, before social media, before anything else – it no longer falls off the end of the to do list each day.

That means that instead of constantly putting off the stuff that matters…

You actually get it done.

Doing focus work first doesn’t just boost your productivity.

It changes your results.

And once you see how much more you can get done in the same amount of time – you’ll wonder why you didn’t start this sooner.

Hi Reader, In last week's newsletter, I wrote about why setting goals makes you more successful. But here’s the uncomfortable truth: Lots of people set goals. Very few actually achieve them. It’s not because they’re lazy. It’s because they don’t make a plan. And as Antoine de Saint-Exupéry once said… "A goal without a plan is just a wish." Your goals might be clear in your head – but...

Hi Reader, Do you feel like you’re constantly busy? Constantly working, working, working… yet still not really getting anywhere? Does it kind of feel like you are on a backwards treadmill - no matter how hard you work, you just never seem to move forwards? If so, you are definitely not alone. So many bloggers and business owners tell me that they feel like this. And the reason is nearly always the same: They've never set proper goals for their business. And if you don't set goals, you can't...
